‘Striped Pajamas’ Brings Holocaust Home

Congregation B’nei Israel is sponsoring the Costa Rican premiere of “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” March 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Cine Magaly theater in eastern San José’s Barrio La California.

The award-winning film is based on Irish author John Boyne’s 2006 novel of the same name about a young German boy – the son of a high-ranking Nazi officer – who befriends a Jewish boy on the other side of the concentration camp fence during the Holocaust.

Shot in Budapest, Hungary, the British-American film stars Asa Butterfield, David Thewlis and Vera Farmiga and is directed by Mark Herman. A review in the U.K.-based Times Online said the film “tells a simple tale of unimaginable horror” and called it “one of the most moving and remarkable films about childhood” and “a beautifully balanced chamber piece.”

Tickets for the premiere can be purchased for ¢4,000 ($7.30); for more information, contact Congregation B’nei Israel at 2231-5243.
