Gallo Pinto Ranked Among World’s Best Bean Dishes

Gallo pinto, one of Costa Rica’s most familiar and widely served dishes, has again earned international attention after being included among TasteAtlas’ top bean dishes in the world. The food guide currently lists gallo pinto among its best-rated bean dishes globally, while also describing it as a traditional national dish of both Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

TasteAtlas describes gallo pinto as a mix of cooked and fried rice and beans prepared with herbs and vegetables such as cilantro, peppers, celery, and onions. On its recipe page for the dish, the platform also highlights black beans, rice, onion, bell pepper, coriander and Lizano sauce among the core ingredients associated with the Costa Rican version.

The name gallo pinto translates as spotted rooster, a reference to the speckled look created when the beans and rice are mixed together. TasteAtlas notes that the dish is commonly eaten for breakfast, but it is also served at lunch or dinner, a reflection of how deeply it is woven into daily life in Costa Rica.

In Costa Rica, gallo pinto is widely recognized as a national dish and is especially associated with breakfast tables across the country. The Costa Rican Tourism Board describes it as the country’s national dish and one of its signature breakfast foods, often served with eggs and coffee.

TasteAtlas also points to the long-running debate over the dish’s roots. The platform says gallo pinto is claimed as a national dish by both Costa Rica and Nicaragua, with one of the most commonly cited differences being the beans used. In Costa Rica, black beans are the best-known version, while the Nicaraguan style is more commonly linked to red beans.

That debate has done little to reduce gallo pinto’s place in Costa Rican identity. For many Costa Ricans, it is more than a plate of rice and beans. It is a food tied to family kitchens, roadside sodas, hotel breakfasts and everyday routine, and one of the clearest symbols of our country’s culinary tradition. Costa Rica’s tourism board continues to feature gallo pinto prominently in its official culinary material, showcasing its role as one of our country’s defining flavors.
