Anabel González Accepts Top Agriculture Post at WTO

ANABEL González, who led the Costa Rican negotiating team for the Central American Free-Trade Agreement with the United States (CAFTA), has been chosen to direct the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Agricultural Division, the daily La Nación reported Tuesday.

The WTO has a director-general, five deputy directors and 19 division directors, now including González. It has 149 member countries and sets rules for global trade with a tendency toward liberalization.

Before serving as lead CAFTA negotiator, González was Vice-Minister of Foreign Trade from May 1998 to April 2001.

In September of 2004, González was among the seven high-level government officials to resign from President Abel Pacheco’s government in a conflict over the administration’s priorities.
