New Road To Help Decongest Beach Town

Construction has begun on a key road expected to decongest the booming beach town Tamarindo on the northwestern Pacific coast.

In a matter of months, Los Jobos road, which will connect Tamarindo at Hotel Pasatiempo with the nearby inland community Villareal’s elementary school, will be completed, according to Public Works and Transport Ministry (MOPT) spokesman Omar Segura.

The 4.6-kilometer gravel road, being constructed by the Municipality of Santa Cruz with support from investors, MOPT and the nonprofit Tamarindo Improvement Association, will cost nearly $50,000.

During the tourism high season, from December to April, the town’s main road is packed with cars and pedestrians. Roads and other infrastructure have been straggling behind as the area has become a hotbed of construction projects largely funded by foreigners (TT, Jan. 7, 2005).
