ICE to Speed Up Internet, Offer Cell Lines Earlier

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) announced last week that new cell lines would be ready by Christmas. The Institute is also readying to improve Internet access.

The 300,000 cell phone lines purchased from the Swedish company Ericsson for $65 million have been plagued with delays, but will be available by December.

As for Internet connections, ICE will be offering 179,000 high-speed Internet connections that are faster than those now available, an increase from eight to 24 megabits per second, said Claudio Bermúdez, the company’s assistant telecommunications manager.

The connections will be brought online next year and will raise the number of the country’s high-speed connections per 100 residents from three to nine.
