Costa Rican lawmakers on Tuesday approved a loan to build a new pier in the Caribbean port of Moín.
The approval in a second round of debate will provide the Atlantic Port Authority (JAPDEVA) with $55 million to improve docks infrastructure in the province of Limón.
Allan Hidalgo, president of JAPDEVA, said the credit “will help to overcome the lag in dock operation in the country,” adding that [the loan] will be used to build a 300-meter dock onto existing facilities.
Social Christian Unity Party lawmaker Walter Céspedes Salazar said that in order to finalize the loan with a national or international bank, lawmakers should draft a new bill for the contract to be approved by the Legislative Assembly.
Current Limón ports do not meet appropriate requirements to allow the docking of new ships that require greater depth in berths.
The new port terminal mostly will be used for tourism, but also for maritime cargo, imports and exports, and as a marina for recreational boats, among other activities.
