New Substation to Improve Power Along Central Pacific

The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) has finished construction of a new electrical substation in the Central Pacific, according to a recent ICE press release.

The new substation is intended to provide better electrical service to the communities of Parrita and Aguirre, areas that have a history of blackouts and electrical problems.

The ICE press office told The Tico Times that the installation has the capacity to provide electricity for up to 200,000 families. Energy demand in the zone is expected to increase by 10 percent in the coming years.

According to the daily La Nación, 24,000 residents now live in Aguirre and 14,000 in Parrita.

The substation also will serve as a link in Central America s grand plan to interconnect the electrical grid from Mexico all the way to Colombia.
