Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Airport inaugurated special zone for pets

The number of pets traveling by plane through Daniel Oduber International Airport, located in Guanacaste, doubled from 2019 to 2022. Therefore, the airport administration inaugurated a new area for animals.

This is great news for tourists who travel with their pets, as they will now have a special area within the airport.

The space is situated after the security checkpoint, before boarding to the boarding lounges. Its use is free, but passengers must keep their pets on leashes and always accompany them.

In addition, the pet area is equipped with synthetic grass and a cat litter box. There is also a sewage disposal grid, a drinking fountain, a space for solid waste disposal, and disposable bags. All the materials used were recycled from previous projects.

Cleaning personnel from the terminal will periodically check the area and spray it with a biodegradable odor and bacteria neutralizer. At the end of the day, the site will be thoroughly washed.

“We have created this special pet area to complement our passengers’ travel experience. We want to keep providing a great service, and we want you to know your pets are welcome at this airport. We seek to make the waiting period more bearable for the animals and their owners,” said César Jaramillo, General Manager of Guanacaste Airport.

It’s worth noting that in 2019, 646 dogs came into the country through this airport, and by 2022 it incremented to 1,298. Regarding departures, 612 dogs left the country in 2019, and 1,121 did so in 2022.

Jaramillo also confirmed that, regarding this matter, airport authorities are “evaluating different proposals to execute them according to the demand of our passengers.”

Undoubtedly, this will make life easier for those traveling with pets, providing them with a safe and appropriate space for animals to stay while waiting for flights.
