“La Sele’’ – Costa Rica’s national soccer team, or Selección – defeated Trinidad and Tobago Wednesday night 2-0 in a match that took the country one step closer to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.Fifteen minutes after the game began, Costa Rica’s Ronald “La Bala” (“The Bullet”) Gómez made a pass to Álvaro Saborío, who scored the game’s first goal, sending the crowd gathered at Ricardo Saprissa Stadium in Tibás, north of San José, into an ecstatic frenzy. The second goal, scored by Walter Centeno during the game’s second half, left Costa Rica with 13 points and in third place among the six teams it is playing to qualify for the World Cup, including the United States, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama and Mexico. To qualify for the World Cup, the team must either defeat the United States in a match to be held Oct. 8 or hope Guatemala, which has accumulated eight points, loses in its upcoming match against Mexico in Mexico City.If Costa Rica qualifies, 2006 will be the country’s second consecutive round at the World Cup. The national team made it to Italy in 1990 and Korea in 2002.
