More Ticos Divorced Than Married Last Year

LAST year, more Ticos divorced eachother than married, and there were moredivorces than ever, following a trend of atleast the last four years.The Civil Registry, part of theSupreme Elections Tribunal, reported9,467 divorce requests in 2004, comparedto 9,442 in 2003 – a jump from 7,786 in2002 and 7,084 in 2001.May was the month of most disenchantment,registering the highest numberof divorce requests at 1,260, followed byJanuary with 1,097.About 50% more divorces werereported than marriages last year. The registryreported 6,843 couples tied the knotin 2004.
