Public Education Sees Massive Oversupply of Teachers

Costa Rica may have too many teachers.

The Public Education Ministry (MEP) received more than 28,000 job applications for just 2,700 openings for the 2007 school year, according to a MEP statement.

MEP Vice-Minister Alejandrina Mata issued a statement calling the oversupply in the teaching labor market a “dramatic situation.”

An excess of teachers trained for preschool and education administration exists, while in other areas, such as math, science, French, and social studies, teachers are lacking, Mata said.
