An Italian identified by the last name Cappelli sentenced to eight years in prison in his country for bankruptcy fraud was arrested last week in Desamparados, San José, according to a statement from the Public Security Ministry.
Italian authorities issued an international warrant for Cappelli’s arrest in 2004. He is also charged with commercial fraud and circulation of counterfeit money, among other crimes.
Cappelli, 52, is married to a Costa Rican and was running a private security company called Sigrid S.A., the statement said.
Cappelli, who faces deportation, claims his identity was stolen in Italy and that he is innocent.
