British Embassy Supports Peace with Nature

With a donation of $82,000, the United Kingdom announced support for President Arias’ Peace with Nature initiative last week.

According to a statement from the British Embassy, the country has placed climate change near the top of its foreign policy priorities, and is the first country to support Costa Rica’s “ambitious goal of attaining carbon neutrality by 2021.”

Costa Rica’s Peace with Nature initiative, officially launched in May, would place the country first in a global effort towards carbon neutrality (TT, July 27).

In addition to the funding, the embassy has also offered the assistance of British communications specialist Clair Hughes, with “the specific aim of developing effective Peace with Nature communications strategies in five key government ministries.”

Hughes would work with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT), the Ministry of Health, the Environment and Energy Ministry (MINAE), the Ministry of Education (MEP) and the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), with the aim of promoting climate change awareness and action both inside and outside government ministries.
