United Airlines will continue flights to Costa Rica through mid-June

United Airlines is offering several commercial repatriation flights between the United States and Costa Rica until mid-June.

The airline is currently selling tickets between George Bush Intercontinental/Houston Airport (IAH) and Juan Santamaría International Airport for the following dates:

  • May 22, 25, 27, 29.
  • June 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 15.

Tickets aren’t cheap: As of press time, the cheapest option for a one-way flight to the United States costs $807 on June 1. (Passengers cannot currently book award travel for these flights.)

Flying from Houston to Costa Rica is slightly cheaper — those seats start at $637 on multiple dates.

The only people who can enter Costa Rica until at least June 16 are citizens and certain residents. These people will be issued a 14-day home isolation order and will be tested for the coronavirus.

Non-citizen residents who depart Costa Rica through at least June 15 are obligated to sign a form acknowledging they cannot return to the country until further notice.

Available flights to Costa Rica

Juan Santamaría International Airport lists the following tentative schedule for airlines to resume service to SJO:

  • Air Canada at an unspecified date in July.
  • American Airlines on July 7 to Miami and Dallas.
  • British Airways on June 27 to London.
  • Condor on June 29.
  • Delta Air Lines on June 19.
  • Edelweiss on June 23 to Zurich.
  • Latam on June 16 to Lima.
  • Southwest Airlines on August 30 to Fort Lauderdale and Houston.
  • Spirit Airlines on July 5 to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.

Dates are subject to change (and are likely to do so if Costa Rica extends its border restrictions).

All other airlines have either indefinitely suspended service to Costa Rica or have yet to inform the airport when they will resume flights.

The Health Ministry has said that all arriving international flights during the coronavirus crisis should utilize Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) rather than Liberia International Airport (LIR).
