Jacó Happenings 10/01/10

Congratulations to Jairo Pérez for winning the second date of the Triple Corona invitational surf competition Sept. 19 at Morgan’s Cove in south Jacó. Nataly Bernold took the women’s open category, and Anthony Segura was top among the juniors. Don’t forget the Backyard’s weekly Saturday Surf Series in Playa Hermosa, where local surfers Luis Vindas, Carlos Muñoz, Jason Torres and Gilbert Brown are sure to put on a good show.

On Saturday nights, Tommy Colón Golden hosts the Costa Rica Blues Society at Hotel Canciones del Mar, on the third-floor Sacagomas Bar overlooking Playa Jacó, with lots of great blues, drink specials and people from all over the world.

Andrea Jiménez’s Wahoo’s restaurant, across from Jacó’s Central Park, is now open every day except Tuesday, serving beef and seafood fusion specialties from 11:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5:30 to 10 p.m. For
reservations, call 2643-1876.

The Malecón Bar opened recently in central Jacó, next to Corpus Gym. Stop by and check out the sunset with one of the bar’s drink specials.

Carol Angus and Nancy Dilbeck of the Central Pacific Women’s Group recently organized a fun-filled day trip to the Playa Hermosa turtle refuge. More than 20 group members had the opportunity to transfer eggs from the turtle nests to the protected area, as well as release newly hatched baby turtles. The group donated a roll of much needed aluminum screening, which is used to protect the incubating eggs. Everyone left with smiles on their faces.

The Women’s Group Lunch Bunch is now being chaired by Lindsey Henderson. The next lunch is scheduled for Oct. 12 at 12:30 p.m. at Caribe restaurant, next to the entrance of Bahía Encantada on the way to Clarita’s. To confirm attendance, write to centralpacificwomensgroup@yahoo.com. The group’s permanent new meeting day will be the third Wednesday of every month, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Balcón del Mar. This month, naturalist and environmentalist Randall Ortega will speak on proving Jacó has all the tools to become a sustainable ecotourism mecca.
