Jacó Happening

Dick Tanner of CR Primo Fishing Tackle and Raul Barrantes from the Environment Ministry (MINAET) will entertain the Central Pacific Women’s Group at Hotel Cocal May 16, from 9-11 a.m. Guests will learn what brings people from all over the world to fish in our waters.

The experienced Tanner will weave his “fish stories” to answer many of our questions, like, what is the difference between a sailfish and a marlin? What is long lining? How does catch and release work? What is the government doing to protect our waters? Tanner will be joined by Barrantes, who does some volunteer work for MINAE and whose family owns a coffee plantation. Join us as we combine fish and coffee for an informative meeting.

Jacó’s library is an amazing community resource. Liana Robinson from Jacó’s Library & Learning Center has announced a new monthly schedule of activities. On the schedule, you’ll find homework tutoring and English and Spanish lessons by appointment with Genavive 8518-0517, in addition to kids activities that include a book report club, and classes in art and science on Thursdays from 9-10:30 a.m. and 2-3:30 p.m.

Beth Holden, who can be reached at 8705-2687, will be hosting weight loss challenge workshops on Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. If you have a workshop or seminar you would like to offer at the library, please call Liana at 8378-9978.

With Cinco de Mayo falling this weekend, it is sure to be a fun time in Jacó Beach. Kurt Dyer plays live at Los Amigos tonight and there’s live Latin music every Saturday at Clarita’s. Lots of beautiful people will be in town this weekend with the National Men’s and Women’s Physical Fitness Competition. It will be held at Morgan’s Cove Hotel on the south side of town. For more info, call 2643-3147 or 8390-3115.

Tomorrow: Sueno Sobre Las Olas (Dream on Waves) will be holding a special event at 7 a.m. on the beach in Jacó. With the help of local surfers Anthony Fillingim, Anthony Segura, Carlos Múñoz, Mauricio Umana, Jair Pérez, Emily Gussoni, Manuel Mesén, Freddy Camacho (Salsiboy) and lots of volunteers from the community, this not-for-profit group will be teaching surfing as a tool for life.

Their program is designed to work with people with disabilities, children at risk, seniors and cancer survivors. If you would like to help this organization, visit www.misolas.org. In the afternoon, you can check out the local surfing in the Saturday Surf Series in front of Backyard Bar in Playa Hermosa.

Lastly, mark your calendars for next week’s 6K run. It takes place Saturday, May 12, and will help save the turtles in the Refugio of Playa Hermosa. For more information or to sign up, visit www.costaricarace.com.
