OAS calls on Nicaragua to stop violence against demonstrators

The head of the Organization of American States condemned killings in Nicaragua by “repressive forces and the armed forces,” and called on the government President Daniel Ortega to stop the violence.

The appeal on Thursday by Luis Almagro, secretary general of the regional security organization, followed bloody clashes Wednesday in which 11 people were killed, according to a human rights group.

“We condemn the killings carried out by the repressive forces and the armed forces and we express our solidarity with the families of the victims,” Almagro said. “We call on the state to stop the violence by these repressive factors.”
