Liberation lawmaker testifies in ongoing corruption case

From the print edition

National Liberation Party (PLN) lawmaker Jorge Angulo testified Wednesday morning before judges of the Penal Branch of the Supreme Court in a corruption investigation that involves allegations of extortion and influence peddling.

Judge Carlos Chinchilla plans to listen to hearings and evidence from litigators before deciding whether Angulo will face trial.

The PLN legislator is under investigation for allegedly demanding kickbacks from a company building a school in the Southern Zone. Angulo has faced several other criminal charges in the past. Lawmakers removed his congressional immunity last month. The lawsuits were brought on by the construction company COINKRJ and the Attorney General’s Office.

The Attorney General is suing Angulo for allegedly damaging the country’s image, according to the daily La Nación.
