Costa Rica Plays United States in World Cup Qualifier on Monday

Costa Rica stands in the way of the United States in its quest to qualify for the World Cup in Germany in 2011. The two teams will face off on Monday night at 5 p.m. in Cancun, Mexico.

If Costa Rica is successful, it would knock out the United States and play Italy for a slot in the World Cup tournament. But it will be a tough challenge for the Ticas, who lost to the United States (0-4) just seven days prior.

Canada and Mexico already have qualified for the June 2011 World Cup, after Mexico’s 2-1 win over the United States and Canada’s 4-0 win over Costa Rica.

In the qualifying tournament, which began Oct. 28, Costa Rica defeated Guatemala and Haiti, but endured losses to the United States and Canada.
