Health officials seize Chinese products from supermarket

Authorities from the National Animal Health Service (SENASA) confiscated animal-based products at a supermarket Tuesday. Products seized included mackerel, sardines, Chinese sausage, smoked pork, smoked duck, eggs, and canned eel, according to the daily La Nacíon.

The sweep followed complaints of irregularities at the store. Authorities would not comment on the supermarket’s name or location. They said that the business’ owner was unable to provide documents about the products’ importation, according to a release from SENASA on Tuesday morning.

Other irregularities included a lack of labeling in Spanish, obscured expiration dates and lack of registration with the Health Ministry.

The packaging of some canned goods, including mackerel and pork, were rusty.

SENASA warned that these products contain a high sanitary risk and could transmit diseases such foot and mouth disease and avian influenza.
