Costa Rican coffee exports fall for 3rd consecutive month

Coffee exports fell more than 21 percent in August compared to the same month last year, the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (Icafé) reported. August was the third consecutive month that national coffee exports fell in comparison to 2010 figures.

In August, 34,302 60-kilogram bags of coffee were exported from Costa Rica. That’s down 21.5 percent from the 43,715 total during the same month last year. After exceeding 2010 figures during the first five months of the coffee harvest year, which begins in October, coffee exports have been below last year’s figures in five of the last six months.

Despite diminishing figures, the export total for the 2010-2011 harvest has already eclipsed the total for the entire 2009-2010 season. More than 1,195,000 bags have been exported from Costa Rica during the first 11 months of this year’s harvest. The export total for the 2009-2010 harvest was 1,191,788 bags.
