Costa Rican teen arrested on murder charge in OIJ officer’s death

A 16-year-old Costa Rican was arrested Saturday afternoon on suspicion of the murder of Allan Sánchez, a Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) agent that was killed Friday afternoon in Alajuelita, a neighborhood in southern San José. According to the OIJ, the minor was arrested Saturday afternoon as he walked along a public street in Alajuelita. The suspect has a history of theft.

On Friday, Sánchez, who worked with the OIJ for nearly seven years, was killed in front of his home on Calle Cochea around 12 p.m. Sánchez, 32, returned home from the gym and was met by at least two men. He was shot once and walked 30 meters before collapsing in front of a neighbor’s home.

The OIJ reported that the investigation had provided sufficient clues to lead to the arrest of the minor. Three suspects originally detained Friday on suspicion of the murder were released later that afternoon. On Sunday, the minor was sentenced to two months of preventive prison.
