Citizens vote to recall Pérez Zeledón mayor

The Southern Zone canton of Pérez Zeledón voted to remove Luis Mendieta from his job as mayor – the first time in Costa Rican history that a mayor has been recalled from his position.

The daily La Nación reported that more than 16,000 people voted this weekend to recall Mendieta, and with 82 percent of the votes counted Mendieta’s dismissal seems inevitable.

La Nación reported that Pérez Zeledón citizens are punishing Mendieta for not improving problems related to garbage collection and potholes.

The election commission has 15 days to announce a result. Pérez Zeledón Vice Mayor Vera Corrales will take over Mendieta’s position.
