Ciudad Quesada–Aguas Zarcas Road Closed for Weeks After Collapse

Anyone traveling between Ciudad Quesada and Aguas Zarcas will need to use alternate routes for at least a month after heavy rain washed out part of Route 140. Repairs could take up to a month and a half, potentially keeping the damaged stretch closed until mid-November.

The closure is in the La Llanada area, between Finca La Llanada and central Ciudad Quesada, on the road toward La Marina and Aguas Zarcas. Although the collapse destroyed one lane, the affected section is closed to all vehicles and drivers cannot pass through using the remaining lane.

The main alternate route uses Route 35, the highway heading toward Los Chiles, and Route 4 between Muelle and Aguas Zarcas. These roads allow drivers to get around the damaged section. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has identified Route 35 as an alternative suitable for all vehicle types.

However, there are other options. Authorities initially identified the route through Las Tesalias as an available bypass. Those unfamiliar with the area should check conditions before choosing a local shortcut and follow directions from traffic officers near the closure.

Anyone going by bus should also check their trip before leaving. Services toward Pital and Sarapiquí have changed their routes because of the collapse, with longer journeys possible while the road remains closed. Travelers with onward connections should allow extra time and confirm pickup arrangements with their operator.

The road gave way on Monday night and a subsequent inspection by the National Roadway Council (CONAVI), found that heavy rain had caused the drainage culvert beneath the road to collapse. The culvert carries water under the pavement and repair work was scheduled to begin today. Crews must replace the damaged drainage structures and carry out work to control water at the site before traffic can return.

Infrastructure Vice Minister Pablo Camacho put the repair period at one month to a month and a half. That points to a possible reopening between late October and mid-November, rather than a confirmed opening date. Thise planning trips through this part of northern Costa Rica should account for the detour until authorities announce that the road has reopened
