An apparent jaguar pelt found inside a home during raids against a violent criminal group has opened a separate wildlife investigation alongside an organized crime case involving drugs, weapons and homicide. The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) carried out eight raids early this morning in Heredia, Aserrí and Desamparados. Ten suspects were detained, including alleged members of a group operating primarily from the La Gran Samaria neighborhood in Heredia.
Investigators believe the organization carried out tumbonazos, a term used in Costa Rica for armed robberies in which criminals steal drugs, money or other contraband from rival trafficking groups. Some groups pose as police officers to enter homes or intercept shipments.
Agents seized an apparent jaguar pelt inside one of the properties. Michael Soto, interim director of the Judicial Investigation Organization, said the discovery is now being examined as a possible violation of Costa Rica’s Wildlife Conservation Law. Authorities have not determined where the pelt originated, how it reached the house or whether the animal was killed in Costa Rica. It is also unclear whether the pelt was being kept as a trophy, offered for sale or moved as part of a wildlife-trafficking operation.
Investigators will also need to formally confirm that the skin came from a jaguar. The jaguar, known scientifically as Panthera onca, is classified as an endangered species under Costa Rican wildlife regulations. National law allows wildlife officials to confiscate animals, skins, body parts and other products linked to suspected illegal hunting, transport or trade.
The discovery could therefore produce an additional criminal case separate from the drug and homicide investigation. Any charges will depend on what authorities establish about the pelt’s authenticity, origin and chain of possession.
The criminal group targeted today is also suspected of involvement in the September 2025 killing of a man in Barreal de Heredia. Investigators believe the homicide followed a dispute involving drugs and that the group hired gunmen from southern San José neighborhoods to carry it out.
A pistol recovered during the raids could be connected to the killing and will undergo forensic testing. The suspects are also believed to have links to another organization dismantled during raids in Santa Bárbara de Heredia on July 9. Six people were detained in that operation, where authorities found counterfeit OIJ vests and high-caliber weapons allegedly used during armed home invasions.
The ten people detained today were transferred to prosecutors, who will determine what precautionary measures to request while the investigation continues. The jaguar pelt remains one of the operation’s most unusual pieces of evidence. What began as a raid focused on violent drug-related crime could now expand into an investigation involving the illegal possession, hunting or trafficking of one of Costa Rica’s most protected wild animals.
