Argentine Thiago Tirante Upsets Tommy Paul to Reach Third Round in Madrid

Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante defeated 15th-seeded American Tommy Paul 7-5, 6-4 on Friday to advance to the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open. Tirante, ranked 75th, needed one hour and 43 minutes to secure the straight-sets victory at the Caja Mágica. The win marks his best result so far at the Masters 1000 clay-court event.

The Argentine broke Paul once in each set and saved all four break points he faced to close out the match. Tirante had earlier defeated Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-4 in the first round. Paul, a former top-10 player currently at No. 18, entered the tournament with strong form but could not match Tirante’s consistency on the slow Madrid clay.

Tirante will next face Britain’s Cameron Norrie, who advanced after beating Czech Tomas Machac 6-2, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5) in a three-set battle on Friday. The 25-year-old from La Plata, Argentina, has shown strong clay-court results this season, including a semifinal appearance in Houston. This Madrid run improves on his previous best Masters 1000 performance of reaching the second round in Miami earlier in 2026.

Tirante’s victory highlights continued progress for Argentine players on the European clay swing, where several have posted notable upsets this spring. He has now won multiple matches at a Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career. The third-round match against Norrie is scheduled for Sunday. The winner could face higher seeds later in the draw, including potential quarterfinal matchups against top players.
