Delizia: The Art of Fine Wine in Costa Rica

Delizia is a family owned business, located in Escazú, San José, that sells and distributes the finest wines from the US. It is the go-to place for wine enthusiasts, well-known sommeliers or anyone who loves and enjoys drinking a glass of fine wine.

It is more than just a store: it is a place to appreciate and savor the unique and high-quality wine that only US products can provide. It’s an art gallery, ready to astonish even the most sophisticated and selective palates.

The Business

Initially, the idea of Delizia came as a family venture looking to diversify in a new business. For this household of entrepreneurs, wine had always been a passion and a product they genuinely enjoyed. It was a very new project for all the members, but being a big, wine-lover family, the idea of embarking in this new adventure was thrilling.

The wine shop has been open for five years. It started out importing wines from the US-specifically from Napa and Sonoma-and from Argentina. As the company grew, the owners decided to specialize and direct their attention to the US wine production.

Recently, their wine compilation is entirely from the US, specifically from Washington State, Oregon and California, mostly from Napa.

This business-owners rapidly understood they wanted something to set them apart and realized there’s nothing quite like the wine industry in the United States. The excellence, class and guaranteed quality of such products, convinced them it was a step in the right direction.

With their growth and the customer satisfaction they have obtained throughout the years, each day, they keep confirming it was the right decision and a differentiator form their competitors.

There are four people running the store and, while they’re not family, their love for wine has brought them together, to form Delizia.

The Wines

Delizia has about 90-100 etiquettes from US. The products are considered to be mid-high-end wines, and their prices start at around $24 per bottle.

Their online and Escazú store, hold some of the most reknown wine brands: Flowers Vineyards & Winery, Barnett Vineyards, Salvestrin, Groth, Quintessa, Staglin Family Vineyards, Hahn Wines, Charles Smith Wines, Faust, Meiomi, The Prisoner Wine Company, 689 Cellars, Michael David Winery, as well as-almost- any delicious drink imaginable.

Without a doubt, there is a type of wine for every taste: for the red wine devotees, there is a magnificent wine collection – mainly from Napa, with merchandise such as, Hahn Pinot Noir, Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, Freakshow Zinfandel, Leviathan Red Blend, Faust Cabernet Sauvignon, Salvestrin Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and The Prisoner Red Blend.

Also, white wines are widely available: from an affordable Submission Chardonnay, to a Michael David Chardonnay or a Flowers Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, and from a Salvestrin Sauvignon Blanc to an Illumination Sauvignon Blanc.

Delizia didn’t forget about the rosés and sparkling wine, as they have some fantastic collections such as Band of Roses Rosé, Domaine Carneros Pompadour Brut Rosé, Meiomi Rosé; and for the sparkling wines, Domaine Carneros Brut.

They have a very special wine collection, for those who treasure fine wine. The prices range depending on the characteristics and this can be discussed directly with the representative.

Innovative, classic and modern etiquettes can be found in Delizia’s cellars. Convenient and new products such as wine cans, are sold; perfect for anyone who enjoys an easy-carrying package for a picnic, a boat day or a glass of wine without having to open up a bottle.

Delizia’s services

These fine products can be found in hotels such as

  • Los Sueños Resorts and Marina
  • The Four Seasons, Nayara
  • Marriott Hotels, Nantipa
  • Secrets Hotels
  • Hotel Grano de Oro
  • Intercontinental Hotel
  • Isla Chiquita Hotel
  • Tipsy in Santa Teresa
  • Mosaic in Ocotal
  • Copper and Stone in Las Catalinas

However, Delizia’s desire to deliver amazing products to their buyers, led them to implement a delivery system. Whether the product needs to go five minutes from Escazú, anywhere in the Greater Metropolitan Area, or anywhere in the country.

Although, the trip to the store is absolutely worth it; with a previous appointment anyone a small group of about three people can sit down for a wine tasting, with some great appetizers and even better wine recommendations. If the group is too big for visiting the store, arrangements can be made to do a wine tasting at home, at a business or anywhere suitable.

Delizia also offers the possibility to have wine ordered and delivered for special occasions such as dinners, parties or any big or small event. Requests can be placed for a particular wine or, if given the indications of the event held, the store’s experts can recommend what they believe will marvel the guests.

More than just a wine shop

Juan Pablo Salgado, co-owner of Delizia, has expressed that his interest and passion for wine, has made him want to transmit it to everyone else. This is exactly why he didn’t want his business to be just a traditional store where people would buy wine, but rather make it an experience and a place where people could cultivate their understanding and passion.

To accomplish this, Delizia partenered with the The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), which provides globally recognized education and qualifications in wines, spirits and sake, for professionals and enthusiasts; together, along with the Costa Rica Country Club, they decided to host a wine event in which people would be able to educate themselves in this area.

It is something they want to keep on doing and make widely available for all those interested in beginning, continuing or mastering their acquired skills in the wine industry. In the end, it’s all about being able to enjoy drinking wine.

Another key point that sets them apart, is that their wine products are organic and eco-friendly. They have been careful to select and work with the owners from the US, who have understood the importance of sustainable production.

Delizia is not just a wine shop, it’s a gallery to pay tribute to bottled art; it’s the perfect combination between science, exquisiteness and sensory enchantment. It is the place where wine lovers can delight themselves and share the precious art of drinking wine.
