Costa Rica eliminated from CONCACAF Champions League with Herediano loss

A Costa Rican club will not lift the CONCACAF Champions League trophy this year.

Club Sport Herediano’s 4-0 defeat to Atlanta United F.C. on Thursday night secured a 5-3 aggregate win for the Major League Soccer side.

Coupled with Tuesday’s elimination of Saprissa, the result means neither Costa Rican club in the 16-team tournament advanced to the quarterfinal round.

It took Atlanta United less than a minute to open scoring Thursday when Josef Martinez fired home a loose cross. The Venezuelan completed his brace in the 63rd minute to put Atlanta ahead on the night, 3-0, and also in command of the aggregate score.
