Marin Cilic, 2014 U.S. Open champion, played in Costa Rica’s junior tournament 10 years ago

Marin Cilic of Croatia celebrates with the U.S. Open trophy after defeating Kei Nishikori of Japan in the men’s singles final on Monday in New York City. Cilic is the latest participant of Costa Rica’s Copa del Café to win a Grand Slam.

The Costa Rica junior level tournament takes place each January. The 25-year-old Croatian lost in the Round of 16 of the 2004 edition of the tournament. Alongside Cilic, former Copa del Café players include Grand Slam champions Roger Federer (who Cilic defeated in the semifinals), Ivan Lendl, Bjorn Borg and Victoria Azarenka.
