Costa Rica Photography: Cahuita’s 2nd International Calypso Festival

Dedicated to Costa Rica’s Calypso hero Walter “Gavitt” Ferguson, the second International Calypso Festival was held over the weekend at the Alfredo Gonzales Flores park in Cahuita, Limon, on the Caribbean coast.

Los Rumberitos de Puerto Viejo, Cahuita Youth, Calipso Caliente, Johnny Dixon, Kawe Calypso, Cantoamérica, Calypso Limón Legends and Shanty are some of the bands that participated in the July 4-6 festival, which honors Calypso music and culture, declared a national heritage in 2012.

“The International Calypso Festival emerged from an effort to create a Calypso Institute in Cahuita to teach music, dance, composition and cultural expression,” Cahuita Cultural Committee member Andrea Mora said.
