Phony Doctor Sentenced in U.S.

A fake U.S. doctor arrested in Costa Rica in 2004 was sentenced in the United States Monday to 20 years in prison for the death of one of his “patients,” whose body was found under a concrete slab in his basement.

Dean Faiello, 47, reportedly ran an unlicensed “skin and laser center” in New York, where authorities said 35-year-old financial analyst Maria Cruz died after visiting him in mid-April 2003 for treatment of a black growth on her tongue.

Cruz’s body was discovered Feb. 19, 2004, under Faiello’s New Jersey carriage house (TT, Feb. 27, 2004). Faiello was arrested at a beach resort on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast Feb. 26, 2004, and was extradited to the United States in 2005 (TT,May 27, 2005).
