Officials Reschedule Santamaría Holiday

Because the April 11 holiday to celebrate national hero Juan Santamaría, famed for his heroic actions in 1856 during the Battle of Rivas, falls during Holy Week this year, it will be observed on Monday, April 17 instead, Labor Minister Fernando Trejos announced last week.

The date switch corresponds to a change in the Labor Code made last year that specifies any holiday falling on a  Tuesday,Wednesday or Thursday is to be observed on the following Monday.

The nation s public schools, which traditionally celebrate the April 11 holiday with parades and other events, will celebrate it on Friday, April 7, this year.
