U.S. deports Costa Rican wanted for sex crime against minor

The United States deported a Costa Rican wanted for sex crimes against children Thursday.

A Costa Rican court issued the warrant for Diego Mata’s arrest for an alleged rape that occurred between 1999 and 2001. Mata, now 46, fled the country around that time.

The Judicial Investigation Police sent out an international alert for Mata, who appeared on the Interpol website for “crimes against minors.” U.S. authorities arrested Mata on Dec. 20, 2011 in Hawaii due to irregularities in his immigration status. The deportation process began soon after.
