Brumas del Zurquí wins Costa Rica’s top coffee competition

A coffee from San Isidro de Heredia, north of the capital, beat out beans from around the country to take top prize in Costa Rica’s International Cup of Excellence coffee competition, the daily El País reported.

The coffee from Brumas del Zurquí, from the Zamora farm in the Central Valley near Heredia, will go on to compete in the global version of the International Cup of Excellence competition on July 3.Brumas del Zurqui grows coffee between 1,200 and 1,600 meters above sea level to achieve a complex coffee with flavors of flowers and fruit, El País reported.

The competition began with 96 coffee entries, which were whittled down by national judges to a total of 27 that will go on to the international competition, according to the El País report.

Winners will send samples to coffee roasters around the world. The roasters will roast the beans they receive to be bid upon in the International Cup of Excellence Auction in July.
