Mandatory change of license plates not due until next year

Rumors circulating on social networks concerning a pressing, mandatory switch for car and motorcycle license plates are false, the National Registry said in a press release.

The rumors have raised concerns among users, but according to the National Registry schedule, the changes that will begin by the second half of the year are only for buses and taxis. The change for regular vehicles and motorcycles will not occur until 2013.

Although official dates have not yet been announced, authorities stated that any person interested in making the change now can easily do so at the National Registry offices.

Cost for the new plates is â‚¡15,000 ($30) for vehicles and â‚¡8,000 ($16) for motorcycles.
