Costa Rica’s foreign minister speaks at UN summit on arms trade

Costa Rican Foreign Minister Enrique Castillo arrived Monday in New York, where he delivered the opening speech at the United Nations’ Arms Trade Summit.

Foreign ministers and high-level representatives of the seven coauthors of a U.N. resolution for an arms trade treaty met Monday during a breakfast hosted by Finland’s foreign minister, Erkki Tuomioja.

Argentina, Australia, Costa Rica, Japan, Finland, Kenya and the United Kingdom coauthored the resolution, which seeks to establish international standards for the import, export and transfer of conventional arms.

During the meeting, Costa Rican diplomat Danilo González reaffirmed “the country’s commitment to ending illegal and irresponsible arms trade around the world.” Costa Rica’s ambassador to the U.N., Eduardo Ulibarri, also attended.
