Awesome ’80s fest to bring pop stars to Costa Rica

RPMTV productions confirmed Tuesday that ’80s idols Toto, Belinda Carlisle and Men Without Hats will perform at the Saprissa Stadium in San José September 8.

The lineup of the “Awesome ’80s Fest” also includes former lead singer from Spanish pop trio Mecano, Ana Torroja.

The venue was confirmed by the president and producer of RPMTV Manrique Mata, who higlighted “the amazing and enormous power ’80s music still has.”

Tickets go on sale July 12 through the online ticketing site www.laboleteria.co.cr. Prices range from ₡18,000 ($36) for general admission to ₡92,000 ($184) for the VIP area.

The guest list

Toto, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, released a total of 17 albums that sold over 35 million copies to date, which included Billboard hits like “Hold the Line,” “Rosanna,” “Africa” and “Georgy Porgy.”

Belinda Carlisle found fame as the lead vocalist of the Go-Go’s, an all-female band. She later went on to a successful solo career with hits like “Mad About You,” “Leave a Light On” and “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” among others.

Canadian new wave band Men Without Hats is well known for its extensive use of synthesizers and a distinctive electronic sound. They are most remembered for two catchy hits, “The Safety Dance” and “Pop Goes the World.”

Like Carlisle, Spanish singer Ana Torroja was first known as lead singer of the pop trio Mecano, but she then launched a solo career in the ’90s. She has since recorded nine studio albums including crossover collaborations in English (with Jason Hart) and in French with Tristan Boccara and Deep Forest. “Hawaii, Bombay,” “Dalai Lama” and “Cruz de Navajas” are some of her most popular songs.
