No more paper for driver’s test physicals

Beginning on Sept. 5, drivers seeking a license will no longer be permitted to submit paper copies of their physical exams. On that date, those exams will only be accepted in digital format.

Hugo Jiménez, director of Road Safety Education, said the transition period – which started on Tuesday – for migrating from paper to digital will run for six months, as defined by the new Traffic Law.

The Costa Rican Doctors’ and Surgeons’ Association backed the new measure and ordered doctors to begin issuing digital versions only starting on Wednesday.

The system for digital physical reports was created last September, following the signing of an agreement between the Public Works and Transport Ministry and the Costa Rican Doctors’ and Surgeons’ Association.

The initiative is aimed at reducing the use of paper and costs associated with storage and archiving. It also seeks to eliminate fraud and prevent deterioration or loss of documents.
