Costa Rican Coast Guard nabs boat with 1.5 tons of cocaine

Drug traffickers on Tuesday abandoned a boat with 1.5 tons of cocaine after being pursued by a Costa Rican Coast Guard patrol at the Caribbean beach of Manzanillo, in the province of Limón.

The four-engine boat carrying some 1.5 tons of cocaine was abandoned on the beach, and the crew fled the site. Drug Control Police (PCD) agents found 50 packs of cocaine plus 30 barrels of fuel.

Four suspects fled into the jungle. PCD agents followed and are performing an operation in the area to search for the alleged traffickers.

Costa Rica’s anti-drug commissioner Mauricio Boraschi said that preliminary investigations indicate suspects may be Colombian nationals.

So far this year, authorities of the Public Security Ministry have seized five tons of cocaine, destroyed 51,494 marijuana plants and dismantled four drug gangs – two local and two with international links.
