Costa Rica to join Earth Hour on Saturday

Ticos on Saturday night will participate in “Earth Hour,” a global initiative to raise awareness for the need to take steps to address climate change.

From 8:30-9:30 p.m., Costa Rican residents will join millions of people around the world in turning off all non-essential lights in their homes.

Members of the nongovernmental organization Sustainability Consultants, the official organizer of the event in the country, also expect businesses to go dark for the planet.

Last year, nearly one billion people in 7,000 cities of 152 countries joined the initiative after the inaugural Earth Hour was held in Sydney in 2007, involving at the time two million individuals and 2,000 businesses.
