Nicaragua Strengthens Ties With North Korea

President Daniel Ortega this week received North Korea’s Foreign Minister Kim Hyong Jun to discuss strengthening ties between the two countries as well as geo-political problems that both countries blame on the United States.

The North Korean official, who was in Nicaragua on Tuesday as part of a three country tour of the Americas that also includes visits to Cuba and Venezuela, told Ortega that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il sends his fond greetings.

The Sandinistas’ state media referred to North Korea as a “brother nation” that demonstrated “solidarity and cooperation” with the Sandinista Revolution in the 1980s.

The hour-long meeting at Ortega’s house in Managua focused on steps to reestablish official diplomatic relations between the two countries, according to state media.
