Golf group plays year-end scramble

The Central Valley Golf Association (CVGA) held its year-end Texas scramble Dec. 7 at Valle del Sol Golf Course in Santa Ana, southwest of San José.

A total of 114 golfers in 38 teams of three played in the tournament. Most teams were made up of regular Valle del Sol players, but teams also participated from the Cariari Country Club, Costa Rica Country Club and Los Reyes Golf Course in the Central Valley and Hacienda Pinilla and La Iguana golf courses on the Pacific coast.

Although the CVGA is made up of mostly North American expats, it has members from 23 countries. The top three teams in the Dec. 7 tournament included players from the United States, Canada, El Salvador, Mexico and Costa Rica. First place went to Brent Binder, Steve Ezell and John Osorno; second place to John Kendall, Paulie Gurciullo and Danny Adamavich; and third to Rafael Calderón, Luis Mitchell and Carlos Chavarría.

After play, at the CVGA’s annual awards presentation, five of the group’s 170 members were recognized as players of the year, based on points earned during 2010. Gary Luedke, Alex González, Al Burgess, Larry Goldman and Michael Hawkins took the honors. Also recognized were the overall teams of the year from the eight competitions played in 2010; tying in overall points were the A-Team (Charlene Nobert, Billy Fernandes and John Garrison) and Team Methes (Norman Sklar, Gary Giampapa and David Maddox).

Valle del Sol is the home of the CVGA. All players are welcome to join the group every Tuesday at this beautiful golf course.
