Alleged Killer of Honduran President’s Son Captured

TEGUCIGALPA (EFE) – U.S. authorities in Washington, D.C. this week captured a Honduran fugitive wanted for the 1997 kidnapping and murder of the son of Honduran President Ricardo Maduro.Honduran Security Minister Armando Calidonio told the press the suspect is Santos Padilla, who escaped from prison in the northern city of San Pedro Sula several years ago.Calidonio, who did not specify when the fugitive was captured, said the necessary steps are being taken to deport Padilla to Honduras from the United States, where he had been living without a visa.Padilla and his three brothers headed the gang of kidnappers that allegedly shot and killed Ricardo Ernesto Maduro in San Pedro Sula on April 23, 1997.The gang was dismantled months after it allegedly killed the younger Maduro, who managed his father’s businesses in San Pedro Sula.Padilla’s three brothers – Abel, Misael and Nahum – were killed in clashes with police, while other members of the gang are either in prison or still at large.
