Sorcerers and Spells Reign At Queen’s Birthday Party

Myths, magic and mystery will charm the public at the annual Queen’s Birthday Party at the British Ambassador’s residence in the western San José suburb of Escazú April 22, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Already a must-go date on the social calendar, this year’s charity event will feature a chance to enter the magical world of Narnia, savor dramatic drafts at the Leaky Cauldron Inne, shop at the Witch’s Wardrobe for hats or at Ye Olde Corner Shoppe for imported items from Merrie England.

All are welcome to guess how many Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans are in the jar or try their skills at the Magic Potions and Coconut Shy. Old favorites Tombola, Lucky Dip, Silent Auction and Home Produce will vie for your trade, as will the sorcerous savories and sweets on offer at the Witches’ Brew Tea Room and the Baggins Banqueting Hall. Younger hexers can cast their spells at the Enchanted Kingdom of Games.

Spellbinding entertainment and music from Costa Rican and international schools and community groups have been dreamed up on two stages. Fantastical prizes will go to best costume in three age categories, as well as to winners of the supernaturally spectacular Raffle Draw.

Ample parking is available for broomsticks and cars. Entrance is ¢2,000 ($4), children ¢1,000 ($2) and under-fives free. Proceeds will benefit the Schools in Need program.
