Most visitors to Costa Rica who make the journey to Tortuguero come for one thing, the canals. Boats glide past caimans, monkeys and sloths on a network of waterways often compared to a Central American Amazon, and for many travelers that experience is the whole trip. Just a short boat ride away, though, sits a hidden gem that even some repeat visitors never discover, a small volcanic hill offering the best view on the entire Costa Rican Caribbean coast.
Cerro Tortuguero rises just 119 meters above the surrounding lowlands, a modest height by Costa Rican standards in a country full of towering volcanoes. What makes it remarkable is context. Tortuguero’s coastline is otherwise flat for miles in every direction, a landscape of wetlands, beaches and dense rainforest canopy with nothing to interrupt the horizon.
Against that backdrop, this small extinct volcanic cone becomes the highest point on the entire Caribbean side of the country, and the only place in the region where visitors can look out over the full sweep of jungle, canal and sea at once. The hill itself has a quiet geological story. It formed as a pyroclastic cone and has sat dormant for an extremely long stretch of geological time, with one side of the cone cut away when the canals that define the area today were originally dug.
It sits within the Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge, a few kilometers from Tortuguero village, close enough for an easy half day excursion but far enough that it rarely sees the crowds that gather for canal tours and turtle nesting walks. Getting there is part of the appeal. Visitors take a short boat ride from Tortuguero to the small community of San Francisco, then set out on a maintained trail that climbs several hundred wooden steps through dense rainforest.
Local guides who run the route regularly point out howler monkeys in the canopy, toucans overhead and, near the summit, bats sheltering in a small cave along the path. The climb is a genuine hike, not a paved lookout point. The reward at the top is a panorama rarely captured anywhere else in Tortuguero. From the summit, the view stretches over the national park’s rainforest canopy, the maze of canals below, the village itself and the open Caribbean Sea beyond.
On a clear day it is easy to see why local guides consider it one of the best vantage points on this entire coast, offering in a single frame everything that makes the region worth visiting. For a destination often experienced entirely from the water, Cerro Tortuguero offers something different, a chance to see Tortuguero from above rather than from within it.
Tours are offered by several local operators in the village, often paired with a canoe trip or a nighttime wildlife walk. For travelers willing to trade an afternoon on the canals for a climb through the forest, it remains one of the more overlooked experiences in a part of Costa Rica that many assume they have already fully explored.
