Costa Rica to Offer No-Appointment Driver’s Tests at National Stadium

Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport will hold a special no-appointment driving test event at the National Stadium on Wednesday, June 17, in an effort to reduce waiting times for one of our country’s most in-demand license services.

The event will run from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the northeast sector of the National Stadium and will be open to people seeking practical driving tests for cars and motorcycles. The measure is part of the country’s 2026 Road Safety Week activities and is being handled by the General Directorate of Road Education, known as Educación Vial.

Applicants will not need a prior appointment or system login credentials to take part. Those credentials will be enabled before the test is administered, removing one of the usual barriers for people trying to access the licensing system.

Participants must bring a valid identity document in good condition, proof of payment for the license category they are applying for, a current medical certificate issued within the last 180 days, and the vehicle they will use for the test. Vehicles with license plates ending in 5 or 6 should not be used that day because of San José’s vehicle restriction rules.

The event is aimed at people who do not already have a practical driving test appointment scheduled. Applicants are also ineligible if they failed a practical driving test during the 20 business days before June 17, since the system automatically blocks a new registration during that period.

MOPT said the extended evening schedule is intended to help people who work or study during regular daytime hours, while also speeding up service and cutting the backlog for practical driving tests.

If demand exceeds the National Stadium’s capacity, authorities will assign additional spaces for Thursday, June 18, Friday, June 19, or Saturday, June 20, at Ciudad Vial in Paso Ancho. Those overflow appointments may also use the extended schedule until 10:00 p.m.

For residents waiting to complete the license process, the June 17 event offers a rare chance to bypass the appointment system and attempt the practical test on the same day. Demand is expected to be high, so applicants should arrive prepared with all required documents, payment confirmation, medical paperwork, and a vehicle eligible to circulate that day.
