Reforma Inmates Get Right to Cleanliness

Inmates at La Reforma won the right to soap, brooms and mops to clean their cells this week.

A judge in the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court ruled jail administrators have the legal obligation to provide inmates with adequate cleaning equipment, which the inmates had demanded for two years without success. Up until the ruling, inmates’ families were providing whatever cleaning materials they could.

“Reforma Warden Ronald Herrera is ordered to adopt the necessary measures in coordination with the Justice Ministry so that the deficiency of cleaning utensils be immediately corrected,” the ruling states.
