THE Friends of Isla del CocoFoundation (FAICO) recently presentedseveral dedicated environmentalists andeconomists with the “Isla del Coco,Natural Patrimony of Humanity” awardsfor their contributions to scientificinvestigation.Award recipients included British televisionproducer Sir David Attenboroughfor his documentary work, the CentralAmerican Institute of BusinessAdministration (INCAE) for generatingsustainable development in the region byforming environmentally aware businessexecutives, and engineer Jorge ManuelDengo for creating the NationalEmergency Commission (CNE) in 1994.The awards ceremony, held Oct. 20 atthe Costa Rica Country Club in the westernSan José suburb of Escazú, included aspeech by Environment Minister CarlosManuel Rodríguez, a gala dinner and asilent jewelry auction.The Friends of Isla del CocoFoundation is an independent, nonprofitorganization created in 1994 to ensure theconservation of Isla del Coco NationalPark, declared a Natural Patrimony ofHumanity by the U.N. Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) in 1997.
