Monkeypox Cases in Costa Rica Up to 24

The Ministry of Health confirmed a new case of monkeypox, for a total of 24 positive cases.

The case is a male with no history of travel abroad, Costa Rican, resident of San Jose and 27 years old, who presented symptoms on November 1st.

The Ministry of Health is tracking the clinical evolution, direct contacts, traceability and isolation. Likewise, the population is urged to go to the health services in case of detecting lesions in the body or any symptom and not to have direct contact with anyone.

It is important to note that monkeypox is transmitted through close, sustained and skin-to-skin physical contact. At the moment, the main route of transmission is through close skin-to-skin contact during sexual intercourse.

Other ways of transmission are through respiratory secretions in face-to-face conversations and contact with contaminated materials from a sick person, the virus can also be transmitted to the fetus or newborn through birth or early physical contact.

The most common symptom associated with monkeypox is skin lesions resembling pimples or blisters, which may be painful or itchy, appearing anywhere on the body, but most commonly in the genital, perianal, face, hands and feet regions.

Fever, chills, swollen glands, exhaustion, muscle aches, back and headaches, and respiratory symptoms (e.g. sore throat, nasal congestion or cough) may also occur.
