In hopes of getting Costa Ricans to reflect on their pacifist tradition, Libertarian Movement legislator Carlos Salazar has presented a bill to establish an annual Day of Peace and Freedom the first Sunday of September every year.
According to Salazar, the object of the day would be to value peace and freedom, which have been threatened in Costa Rica through increased violence and intolerance, and on a global level through terrorists acts and war. The day would allow Costa Rica to share with the world the benefits of living in peace and democracy, according to Salazar.
“We want to promote spaces for the defense of these values and strengthen the search for freedom and democracy where it is being lost,” Salazar said in a statement.
